  L'Estartit - Les Illes Medes

  The Illes Medes a group of tiny islands less than a mile off shore from l'Estartit, the beach of Torroella de Montgrí, are the only islands off the coast of Catalonia. A nest of pirates during the Middle Ages they became a military prison at a later date. Now they ara famous for scuba diving, rich in fish and one of the few places on the Catalan coast where coral still grows and which has been collected since remote times up to the present date. Also it is one of the most important breeding grounds for the silver sea-gulls of which there are over 7,000 pirs. The Illes Medes have been declared "Protected Zone".
