BanyolesTHE TOWN The lake of Banyoles is the only lake in Catalonia and one of the few in the Iberian Peninsula. It is karstic and tectonic in origin and its length is 2,130 with an average depth of 15 m. Its water and vegetation change on different colours during the year so that visitors can appreciate its beauty in the different seasons. The surroundings of Banyoles constitute a picturesque scenery. Rowing trials for the Olympic Games in 1992 took place in this lake. FISHING CONTESTOn the initiative of the naturalist Francesc Darder, in commemoration of the restocking of the Lake of Banyoles, the town's (and the country's) first Fishing contest was held in the summer of 1910. The contest now takes place every year at a pond known as l'Estanyol del Vilar near the main lake. The contestants set off in procession from the town hall at daybreak accompanied by a band which plays the popular tune "L'airet de la matinada" ("Early Morning Airs"). The Fishermen's Association had to limit the number of participants in the competition (a fixed rod without reel is used). Because water's contamination makes decrease the fish population, it is necessary to restock the pond periodically so that contestants can fish successfully. Distance from BEUDA: 8 km. |
